I was distressed this xmas to hear someone (between my own generation and my parents’) say that a big problem in the US is that we sent our kids to college and they are getting useless degrees in things like French Literature “that they will never find a job with that.” I find it sad that people now want their kids to be cubicle-bound and have no dreams, all for the sake of having a job they hate. My mother wanted me to care about the world, find beauty in what it has to offer, and to see the wonder that is in humanity. I might not have a 401K or a house, but I am also debt-free. I have created beautiful things and met amazing artists. I have lived, loved, reveled, imagined, traveled, and experienced things that only dreamers can experience. The next time someone tries to tell you that degrees in French Literature are not important, remind them that 400 years later movies are still being made from the scripts of Shakespeare and Moliere. In 400 years, will any of the books of Donald Trump or Larry Elder even be remembered, let alone celebrated?
In 400 years I believe we will find that unemployment has never been the problem. The real problem is how we perceive employment. We should produce betterment for all, not just profit for a few. If you go to work because, “i can’t lose my job,” then you are enslaved. We should go because, “I change lives. I make this town better. I share myself.”
