Richard Merkin, Artist and Fashion Plate, Dies at 70 - Obituary (Obit) - NYTimes.com
This past Friday, and after a short lunch a Olive Garden, I took my parents
shopping. Although I’ve taken my mom out for clothes, this was the first (and all too quick) shopping spree for dad. He needed a pair of Reebock Velcro sneakers (black and 1/2 size larger than last pair,) socks (Gold Toe and Ralph Lauren,) two (2) bottles of Aramis shampoo, and two (2) short-sleeved shirts with breast pocket (one button down and one knit.)
And yes. He is still just as picky as he was when he used to purchase Hart Shaftner & Marx suits, silk ties, cuff links, French-cuffed raspberry (and other coloured) shirts, and oxford lace-ups. My dad is and was every bit the dandy that Mr. Merkin was, but he did it El Paso style. And although I understand why he insists upon the pocket and know why manufacturers leave them off (cost savings,) it is good to know he still cares about the functionality, feel, and fashion of the items he bought for himself. Gotta do that again real soon, too. <3
