Flickr Photo of the Week – Art & Seek – A service from KERA for North Texas

Guy Reynolds of Dallas, the winner of the Flickr Photo of the Week contest! Guy is a bit of a ringer – he’s been a staff photographer and editor at The Dallas Morning News for nearly 30 years. He shot the above series with a Holga camera, a piece of equipment he says provides a nice break from all the state-of-the-art equipment he uses at work.

James Jowers - a set on Flickr by George Eastman House »

James Jowers
American (b. 1938)

James Jowers interest in photography began while serving in the United States Army where he was trained in darkroom procedures. In 1965 he became a student at the New School and studied under Lisette Model, who later became a close friend and mentor. At this time he was living on the Lower East Side and worked as a night porter at St. Luke’s Hospital; leaving him free to explore the City during the day and photograph life as he encountered it on the streets. Model later introduced Jowers to the Nancy Palmer Photo Agency where he was represented for several years.

The photography collection at George Eastman House holds approx. 400 James Jowers prints. The majority of the images were shot in New York City in the 1960s and early 1970s, an important and interesting time in US history. The photographs are of the New York City street photography genre. There are some remarkable images in this collection, including portraits of New Yorkers in various settings and anti-war protests in Central Park and elsewhere. There are also approximately 25 photographs of New Orleans in the 1970s.

I keep my blog mostly for long-form writing
Robert Scoble"

Twitter, Flickr, Facebook Make Blogs Look So 2004

Wired sees blogging down, personal sites “shoved aside” by professional and “impersonal” blogs such as Huffington Post, TreeHugger, and Engadget. Web writing aps like Twitter, Flickr, and You Tube boom.

What they miss however is the fact that 140 character blog entries, posting photos/videos to Flickr and You Tube are multimodal forms of writing. They contain critical thought and skill with tools and can include titles, tags, and allow for dialog in the form of commentary: Just like old skool 2004 blogging.

Wired needs to rethink what writing and composition entails and that most bloggers don’t care about Technorati. They just want to write, no matter the medium used.

note: this list leaves out a few (Linked In, among others) as seen in the yammering of the commentators. Oh well, you can’t keep up with everything, at all times.

From the lack of common sense files :: Police investigate shots fired on West Side - El Paso Times »

El Paso police were investigating shots fired at about 2:30 p.m. Friday on the mountain trails uphill from the Dakota Ridge area of the West Side.

Police said they located a group of out-of-town people that were apparently practice shooting in the mountains when they startled a man walking on a mountain trail.

There were no reported injuries. An investigation was underway.

In February, there was a similar incident about a mile away when shots may have been fired at a woman mountain-biking on a trail off Calle Lomas Drive.

Sky at Range :: Anthony Gun Range

Anthony Gun Range

OK, here’s the deal. A lot of people here have bought into the trap that tourists/new military people that visit/move here from outside the area are good for the economy. Sheesh. But how many have View :: Up the Trailthought this through to the affect they have on our health and safety?

N.B. The paths mentioned in this article come down the mountain and dump (read suddenly turn into asphalt walking paths) adjacent to high dollar neighborhoods, as opposed to the marvelously scenic and practical Anthony Gun Range (see above) that is in the middle of nowhere off I-10 at the Vado exit.  Suddenly, I feel like I’m in Santa Fe again, Arrow.
