Aerosol art tour pieces together EP, NY, LA and other cities at the Silos - Newspaper Tree El Paso

The tour is in El Paso from 3:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday and 4-9 p.m. Sunday at 1949 W. Paisano.

Dave “Grave” Herrera knows that it’s like to be, in his words, “criminalized from the get-go.” The very nature of his medium for his work — graffiti art — lends itself to the negative connotations that have accrued over the past decades. “We get thrown into a pot of gangsters and cholos,” he said. But he pointed out that the cultural taboo surrounding graffiti shifted long ago; now, high-end brands such as Juicy Couture and L.A.M.B draw inspiration from its calligraphy and the vibrant wall art being in vogue in Japan’s upscale galleries.

That calligraphy, he says, has a foundation in El Paso, a place where muralists and graffiti artists have been given their own open studio at the Silo Aerosol Art Space. The area located by the Rescue Mission is meant to do for graffiti artists what skate parks did for skaters: offer an outlet for local talent. “It’s not getting tapped into,” said Herrera.

Council wants Banksy mural removed - The Independent »

Westminster Council has voted to remove the 23ft high piece entitled One Nation Under CCTV

A council wants to take down a mural by street artist Banksy but admits the work “has value in the right location”.

Westminster Council, which has voted to remove the 23ft high piece entitled One Nation Under CCTV from a wall in Newman Street, London, said it did not want to see the art destroyed, but was trying to take a stand against graffiti.

The mural depicts a red-hooded figure painting the words “ONE NATION UNDER CCTV” on the wall, while a US-style police officer holding a camera and a brown dog look on.

Deputy council leader Robert Davis said: “We are not saying the owners need to paint over this mural as we can see it has value in the right location, such as an art gallery.

“We simply want it removed from this wall and the owner is perfectly entitled to remove it and sell it if they wish.

Chicano Art Receives Overdue Recognition In L.A. : NPR »

For me this is exciting. This one incident confirms for me that there exists a specific visual rhetoric that dovetails with graffiti and seldom researched. There exists a gap. Graffitists write and create their art as a direct response. But to whom? Not the property owner or law enforcement, but as a signal/sign to the cultural elite that bar the Chicano from being noticed or appreciated as a creator of a true art form.

The core of this story reveals how an exhibited Chicano artist pushed back at the hegemonic effect that was about to caputure him. It is about he succeeded.

Back in the day when he was a teenager on a date to a museum to view the art. Suddenly, he needed to find someone and quick, anyone to explain why somethin was missing. But who could answer this important question: Why aren’t Chicano artists exhibited? In the end, the young man was flatly told Chicanos are not in museums because they are “all in gangs.” Date over.

Jump cut. 2:00 a.m. The young man returns with two friends to write (tag) their names on all museum entrances.

“Now Chicanos are at the museum,” they proclaimed proudly.

“It’s been hard-fought recognition.”

Cheech Marin, actor and art collector

Weekend Edition Sunday, October 26, 2008 · Comedian and actor Richard “Cheech” Marin is most often associated with his role in Cheech and Chong — the irreverent comedy duo of the ’70s and early ’80s. Yet today, Marin is making his mark as one of the world’s foremost collectors of artwork by Mexican-American artists.

Marin is third-generation Mexican-American — or Chicano, as he prefers to be called. Of his nearly 400 works of art, he selected 35 for “Los Angelenos/Chicano Painters of L.A.” currently on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

Currents - Walls - A House Mural in Brooklyn - NYTimes.com »

They couldn’t afford to redo the facade, though, which Mr. Sapienza described disdainfully as “flat stucco painted Pepto-Bismol pink.” So this summer they hired an artist named Erik Burke to cover it with a mural.

Mr. Sapienza’s only instructions: “Make it Bushwick-y.”

The result, completed a month ago, is a colorful reimagining of the neighborhood, with a visual shout out to Willy’s, a nearby market, stoop sitters and a subway train (the M) cleverly emerging from the home’s doorway.

Murals are often painted on commercial buildings or schools, but Mr. Sapienza’s house is one of the few in the city, and possibly the only one in Bushwick, to be given this treatment.

Although Mr. Sapienza has a blog about the area (bushwickbk.com), he explained that the mural was less a public declaration of Bushwick pride than “an inexpensive way to add color and art.” (Total cost: $600.)

The mural is a hit with the neighbors, although it recently invited an unwanted sign of affection: For the first time since he moved in, Mr. Sapienza’s house was tagged with graffiti.

What's the Difference? Guerrilla Art Versus Guerrilla Advertising | WebUrbanist »

guerrilla art guerrilla marketing calgary

Today, the urban environment includes not only separate instances of art and advertisements, but advertisements that look suspiciously like art. Guerrilla advertisements that use the familiar rough-edged look of graffiti - and others that use actual graffiti - are found now in cities around the world.

So what’s the difference between guerrilla art and guerrilla advertisement?
